Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood through an illuminating book and poignant lyrics by Steven Sater, and a gorgeous score by Duncan Sheik. Based on the controversial 1891 seminal German play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening is a thrilling blend of morality, sexuality, and rock and roll that has been rousing audiences across the nation for years. In late nineteenth century Germany, the grown-ups hold all the cards and the children are expected to obey. However, once this corrupt society is exposed, a group of students learn how to navigate teenage self-discovery and coming of age anxiety.  (more...)

It might be May, but Flat Rock Playhouse says it's time to pull out the tinsel, hang the mistletoe, and head South for the holidays!  The second of the extremely popular "Greater Tuna" series, a collection of comedic plays set in the fictional town of Tuna (the 3rd smallest town in Texas), A Tuna Christmas will return to the Playhouse Main Stage starring the hilarious Scott Treadway and his (or her) equally hilarious counterpart, Preston Dyar. Though seemingly a two-man show, there will be no lack of characters as these two gentlemen, who have separately been a part of several productions of the Tuna Series, will introduce audiences to over twenty of the town's most colorful characters together for the very FIRST time.  A Tuna Christmas will run on the Main Stage in the Village of Flat Rock from May 19th through June 3rd. New Line continues its 26th season with the local premiere of the fiery 2002 jazz-rock musical THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, by legendary film and stage composer Marvin Hamlisch (his last theatre score), lyricist Craig Carnelia, and Tony-winning playwright John Guare, based on the famous short story and film. The show was nominated for seven Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score, and eleven Drama Desk Awards. It's a Faustian moral nightmare, all set to a sizzling 'jazz noir' score from the composer of the stage musicals A Chorus Line, They're Playing Our Song, Smile, The Goodbye Girl, and the film scores for The Sting, The Way We Were, Sophie's Choice, and many others.  (more...)
