In a new chat with Branch.com, Daring Fireball's guru extraordinaire Jon Gruber shares a few of the tidbits that he's heard from insider sources about the upcoming iOS 7. What's he say?

What I've heard: iOS 7 is running behind, and engineers have been pulled from OS X 10.9 to work on it. (Let me know if you've heard this song before. tuaw.com)

Regarding Ive: Word on the street is that iOS engineers with carry privileges all have some sort of polarizing filter on their iPhone displays, such that it greatly decreases viewing angles, thus making it difficult for observers to see the apparently rather significant system-wide UI overhaul.

Amongst other tidbits, multiple insiders are speculating about an April event to introduce a new iPad.

We reported late last week that Japanese website MacFan revealed morning that Apple will unveil the iPhone 5S on Thursday, June 20th at a typically splashy Apple event and that the device will then go on sale in July. This would match the release schedule for iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4, but not the fall release schedule of the 4S or 5.

Today, the Wall Street Journal has jumped onto the same bandwagon, noting that "Apple Inc. plans to begin production of a new iPhone similar in size and shape to its current one in the second quarter of the year, according to people familiar with the device's production, teeing up a possible summer launch for the next version of its flagship device.

At the same time, Apple continues to work with its manufacturing partners in Asia on a less expensive iPhone that could be launched as soon as the second half of this year, these people said."

This matches other recent reports of a June launch, though of course nothing is yet confirmed. For bonus points, MacFan also claims that the rumored low-cost iPhone will be released in August, targetted towards China and India as a pre-paid device.

Also last week, CNET reported via Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster who's predicting that Apple will release the iPhone 5S in June 2013, for which he's predicting 30 million in sales (up 15% from the 5). What'll be new? Faster processor, better camera, new software and 'maybe' either NFC, or biometric features. He's doubling down prediction wise, guessing that Apple will release the low-cost iPhone in September.

Again, all still rumors.

AppleInsider.com reported mid-March on the same subject - "The new, less expensive iPhone model is said to have a "super-thin plastic casing mixed with glass fiber." The material will make it stronger, thinner and lighter than typical smartphone plastic casings, Kuo said. The phone will also reportedly come in a range of colors, much like Apple's iPod lineup. According to Kuo, there will be between four and six options, expanding from the black and white choices currently available on existing iPhone models."
